Who teaches MMA at TFC
When training in MMA, you want to learn from someone who knows what they’re talking about. Our head coach Ben Johnston is a pro MMA fighter with 13+ years of martial arts experience. He is also a former WBC World Champion in the light heavyweight division.
What classes are in MMA
In order to mix martial arts, you need to know the different martial arts. At The Fight Centre, we have classes that utilise some of the most effective combat sports that are relevant for MMA. Boxing, Muay Thai, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes happen every day of the week. We also have MMA classes to bring these all together. There are separate classes for kids, teens, and adults, so you’ll be training with people that are around your level.
We all have some idea of what Boxing is: punching, defending, moving and punching some more. Boxing focuses on using fists as a weapon and training to be agile and mobile enough not to get hit by the opponent.
If you have zero experience in martial arts and are not very confident in your body coordination, Boxing is an excellent place to start. Since you’ll primarily be using your hands to strike, both feet are always planted on the ground. There are also fewer techniques compared to other martial arts, so the learning curve is less steep.
Muay Thai uses eight points of contact as opposed to Boxing’s two. In addition to two hands, it also uses elbows, knees, and feet for kicking. It requires more balance since you’ll also be striking with your feet, but it deals with much more force than your fists.
In BJJ, you’ll learn how to deal with opponents on the ground. Techniques specific to BJJ are those that involve grabbing and holding onto an opponent’s body or limbs to control and subdue them. These aim to take an opponent to the ground, maintain control while on the ground, and secure submission holds.
If you want to practice (and later compete in) MMA, BJJ is the best way to end a fight in the shortest amount of time with the least amount of injuries.
What the MMA class is like
TFC is an MMA gym Logan that appreciates structure in its classes. If you decide to visit us, here’s what you can expect in our classes:
Start with warm up
Warm ups are critical to loosen your muscles and avoid injuries such as strains. This usually involves cardio (a light jog or jumping jacks) and dynamic stretches to prep you for high-intensity movement. Focus on activating the muscles you’ll be using, and gradually increase the intensity of your movement as you get closer to the end of the warm up.
Techniques and drilling
After the warm up, the coach will then move on to teach one primary technique. They will demonstrate it step by step and ask you to replicate it with your training partner. You’ll focus on this technique and its variations for the training session. The coach will then give you a few minutes to drill it with your partner and familiarize yourself with the movements.
Live drills with resistance
You get a few rounds of doing the drills with a pliant partner, so you know how the technique goes. But after that, you (and your partner) have to provide some resistance against the drills, so you know how to work around it. You may also incorporate some of the other techniques you know, but remember that you should focus on the day’s drills and not get carried away.
MMA sparring on Wednesdays (optional)
While sparring is an excellent way to practice the skills you’ve learned, we realize that only some people want to get into a competitive environment. Some people want to practice MMA because it’s a fun way to get fit and have zero interest in combat, and that’s absolutely fine. If you do want to try your hand at sparring, though, just show up at 7 PM on Wednesdays, and we’ll slot you right in.
