Build Confidence and Self-Defense Skills with Kids BJJ at TFC

BJJ is a Grappling sport.  There is no striking (punches or kicks), instead kids are taught how to submit an opponent using physical holds.  BJJ is a brilliant martial art that focuses on technique and leverage, plus it’s lots of fun.   We accept kids from 6years old and up into the BJJ program, it’s rewarding to see kids build the strength & fitness that comes with the training, but even more rewarding as they begin to learn the strategies involved, and how to use them to solve problems while under pressure!

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment does my child need for BJJ?

BJJ requires a mouthguard for ‘rolls’ (live grappling with an opponent).

When training in a Gi class or grading in BJJ, all students must wear a Gi (the traditional BJJ jacket, belt and pants).

You can purchase Gi from our online store or over the counter in the gym.

On No Gi training days, kids must wear form fitting clothing with no hardware (zips, buttons or drawstrings with hard ends etc).  A rashie and shorts is typically worn to a No Gi training session.

My child has never played any other sports, is BJJ a good place to start?

BJJ is a great place to start!  It can often feel like play fighting, rough and tumble wrestling that they may have experienced with siblings or parents at home.

Or for some kids, who haven’t been able to experience this, BJJ gives them the opportunity to do so.

For many kids who have not been a part of other sports before, BJJ offers a less visible way to build up their skills and test boundaries, that doesn’t ask them to be the fastest, biggest or the strongest on the playing field.

Can my child compete in BJJ?

Yes, there are plenty of great local competitions that our kids compete in, and competition is encouraged, it gives them something to work towards and test their skills.

Learning to fail fast is a key skill in BJJ.  Our coaches will let you know when they feel it’s time for your child to compete, but if for any reason you haven’t got this information, definitely bring it to our attention anytime.
